Marc Magid
President
Marc has been an active member of Temple Beth Sholom since 1991, shortly after he and his wife Amy moved to Roslyn. Marc and Amy have enjoyed over 20 fulfilling years as members of TBS. They have two children, Zachary, a graduate of Lehigh University, and Samson, a sophomore at the University of Miami, who both celebrated their Bar Mitzvah's with the TBS community. Their sons attended TBS's Early Childhood Center and graduated from the Religious School and Machon Beth Sholom.
As a youth, Marc attended Shelter Rock Jewish Center where he graduated from their Religious School and was an active member of the SRJC Youth Group Program. He is a graduate of Herricks High School and the University of Maryland College Park, with a degree in Finance. Marc is the principle owner of MAZS Realty, a real estate development and multi-dwelling property management company.
Over the years, Marc has given back to the local community in many ways. He has served as President of The Merchant Park Civic Association and a member of the Village of Roslyn Planning and Site Review Boards. Marc has traveled extensively with his family to Israel and once vibrant Jewish communities throughout Eastern Europe. For two consecutive years, he participated in a five-day charity bike ride in Israel, raising funds for the Alyn Hospital in Jerusalem.
In addition to his current position as President of TBS, Marc is an active member of the Men's Club, the Co-Chair for the annual State of Israel Bond event, and a committee member of the Jewish Theological Seminary and the United Jewish Appeal annual TBS Events. He is also an associate member of Hadassah.
Prior to his installation as President, Marc served on Temple Beth Sholom's General Board and Executive Boards for a total of 10 years. His Executive Board positions included Executive Vice President, Vice President of Finance and Fundraising, and Financial Secretary. Marc has also held various committee positions, such as Budget and Finance, Endowment, House, Kiddush, Hazak, Summer Camp, Early Childhood Center Building Committee, and the Assistant Rabbi Search Committee.
Over the past ten years Marc has enjoyed studying with fellow TBS members in the monthly Lunch and Learn Study Group, which is led by Rabbi Alan Lucas.
Marc is very much looking forward to further strengthening Temple Beth Sholom's reputation for spiritual guidance, early childhood and religious school education, adult educational programs, and community outreach.
Richard Levine
Executive Vice-President
Richard is a second generation member of TBS, the son of long time members Marvin and Charlotte Levine. Richard is a graduate of our religious school and Machon. He traveled to Israel on USY Pilgrimage with his TBS confirmation class in 1978. Richard became a Bar Mitzvah and was married at TBS. Richard’s wife Lisa also grew up in Roslyn. She is a practicing attorney in Syosset and is currently the co-president of the Roslyn chapter of Hadassah. Their three sons, Seth a sophomore at Syracuse University, Aaron an eleventh grader and Ethan an eight grader all have been educated in TBS’s Early Childhood Center (ECC), Religious School and Machon. The three boys also all celebrated their Bar Mitzvah’s at TBS.
Richard is an NYU graduate and currently runs his family’s insurance business, MRL Agency in Great Neck. He is on the agency council of several major insurance carriers. Richard’s involvement in the community spans many organizations. He was President of the Fairfield Park Civic Association. Upon moving to Roslyn Estates, he was elected as a trustee, and served for six years. He is currently Roslyn Estates’ emergency manager. Richard focuses on helping Roslyn’s youth. He has coached many teams in different sports, and was Roslyn Little League’s President for two years. He is still currently an active member of the board, and heads the league’s student umpire program.
At TBS, Richard chairs the insurance committee, and is the synagogue’s liaison between The Roslyn Little League and The Roslyn School District. His most challenging job at TBS has been undertaking the chairman position of the construction of the new ECC.
Ellen Walk
Vice President of Religious Affairs
Ellen thinks of Temple Beth sholom as a neighborhood treasure. She and her husband Paul joined the shul after sending their daughters, Melissa and Rebecca to the Early Childhood Center. She claims that when sh arrived on the doorsteps of TBS she had no idea-not even a clue- what synagogues were all about, but quickly fell in love with the kehilah kedosha. Ellen has been a member of the Board of Trustees, the VP of Membership, and co-chair of the Chesed Committee.
A registered Dietitian, Ellen works in the Women's Health Center at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. As senior Health Educator, she teaches patients about prenatal and postpartum care.
On most Shabbat mornings, Ellen can be found on the left side of the sanctuary, which she affectionately refers to it as the "Deli section", because it is also home to our members the Bergers, the Franks, and the Freys. Come by anytime and she will be happy to show you her extensive sticker collection, which she keeps in her tallit bag and uses to entertain her younger friends.
Lewis Bartell
Vice President of Programming
Lewis was born and raised in Brooklyn where he began his Jewish education by attending theYeshivah of Flatbush through high school. Following high school Lewis earned a B.S. in Pharmacy and a law degree from Cardozo School of Law. As a Partner at the law firm of Kaplan BelskyRoss Bartell, LLP in Garden City he provides counsel to a wide range of individual and business clients. He is a member of the New York State Trial Academy and the New York State Bar and Nassau County Bar Associations.
Susan and Lewis moved into the Roslyn community in 1997 and immediately made Beth Sholom their home. Along with Solomon Schechter Day School where Max (HS '12) and Mollie (HS '16) are students, and North Shore Hebrew Academy High School where Gillian (HS '14) is a student, Beth Sholom is where they are empowering their children to be the future of the Jewish people. All three are at home at TBS having attended early childhood classes, pre-k, day camp, regularly attending Shabbat and Yom Tov services and have become B'nai Mitzvah here (even Lewis' mother Sheila recently became a Bat-Mitzvah at TBS).
Beth Sholom has also been the place where Lewis has continued his Jewish education. For the past 11 years he has been fortunate to study every third Tuesday, with nine TBS friends in the Rabbi's study group. Founded originally with Rabbi Adam Feldman, it has be led for the last six years by Rabbi Lucas. Lewish treasures this time spent in Jewish learning and sees it as a great example of how Jewish learning should never stop. Lewis also treasures his opportunity to participate as a lay leader in the Tikkun Leylprogram on Shavuot.
Lewis serves as a member of the House, Legal and Constitution committees where he brings his legal expertise to hear (even when it is not asked for). Lewis, along with Max, Gillian and Mollie can frequently be heard reading the Torah on Shabbat and Yom Tov. Lewis is also a supporter of the Men's Club and serves as a High Holidays Usher Captain.
Pearl Halegua
Vice President of Education
Pearl and Nathan moved to Roslyn in November, 1983, with their sons Josh and Aaron. Josh was registered in Temple Beth Sholom's Early Childhood Center before they moved into the house. Pearl had heard from her new neighbors that it was the best early childhood center in the area. She and Nathan were also attracted to Temple Beth Sholom by its egalitarian services, mixed seating and exciting programs. The years flew by, Josh earned his BA from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Real Estate Development from NYU; he currently works in real estate with Nathan. Aaron earned a BA from Brown University and a Law Degree from Harvard. He is working as a Skadden Arps fellow for Legal Aid in the fall of 2009.
Pearl received her BA from Queens College and her MA from Hofstra University in Math Science and Technology. A retiree from the NYC Bd of Ed, Pearl has increased her already active volunteer involvement. As a committed member of Temple Beth Sholom, Pearl has chaired various committees from PTA Model Seders in the 80's to the Ground Breaking and Ribbon cutting ceremonies of our new ECC.2011 marks her eighth year as chairperson of the Temple's Yom Hashoah Program. Pearl presently co-chairs Malka's Fund for Life Long Learning, and will be serving her second year as VP of Education.One of her most important commitments to Temple is being part of the "Morei Derech Class" another life long learning experience taught by our clergy.
Since retiring, Pearl continues to be involved in education such as, serving as a leadership mentor for the Student Impact Team at Queensboro Community College and as co-chair of the Board of the Jewish Studies Center at Queens College. The education and well being of children remains her mission. In 2005 Pearl founded the Long Island Chapter of JAFCO, a children's village, caring for abused and neglected Jewish children. Its format is the only one of its type in the U.S. and under Pearl's leadership the Florida- based agency is now raising funds and awareness in the northeast while assessing the need for expansion of their services to the Northeast Jewish Community.
Carolyn Canova
Vice President of Finance and Fundraising
Carolyn Canova grew up in the close-knit Jewish community of Patchogue, NY, attending the Hewbrew Academy of Suffolk County. She graduated from high school at 16, attended Dowling College, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a BBA in accounting and minor in education. She met her husband to be John, in her freshman year and by helping him find a relocated class, found her "bashert".
In her professional life, Carolyn is a CPA and tax partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. She was the first woman admitted to the firm as a partner in the LI office, and is one of LI's Top 50 Business and Professional Women and LI"s Top 40 Under 40. An active member of Temple Beth El of Patchogue for over 30 years, she sat on various committees and ultimately served on the Board of Trustees.
Carolyn and John moved to East Meadow in 1996 with their children, Billy and Beth and joined TBS. Both children attended Solomon Schechter Day School and became B'nai Mitzvah at TBS. Her prior shul involvement was limited to attending services, but when Billy began preparing for his Bar Mitzvah in 2002, Carolyn began taking a much more active role in TBS life. Though arriving with a Hebrew day school and conservative shul background, it was at TBS that Carolyn first discovered new and wonderful ways to celebrate her Judaism in an egalitarian environment. It was here that she was called to the Torah for her first aliyah and inspired by other parents, Carolyn nervously read for the first time at Billy's Bar Mitzvah. That reading led to many more, opening the door to a whole new way experiencing Shabbat and Torah among friends.
Carolyn is a member of the Board of Trustees and the Religious Affairs Committee. Working with fellow members of the ECC Finance committee, she played a key role in securing favorable financial terms. Carolyn is a member of Sisterhood, served on the Membership committee, participated in Vision Beth Sholom, and joyously experienced Israel TBS-style with Rabbi Lucas' last pilgrimage trip. Through TBS she also connected with the Jewish Theological Seminary as part of the Manhattan Lunch & Learn program. Carolyn feels blessed to be a part of the TBS family and deeply honored to be recognized for her many contributions.
Gil Lipper
Vice President of Membership
Gil was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Wantagh. He received his Bachelor of Engineering at The Cooper Union and has been a Sales Engineer in the Electronics Industry since the early 80's. He is married to Susan since 1979, who is also VERY active in the synagogue and a TBS Board of Trustees Member as well as a member of the TBS Board of Education, and to whom he owes his rediscovery of Judaism. His daughters Carrie (Cornell '03; now a Vice President at BBDO Advertising) and Cindy (U. of Michigan '06; now a Doctoral Candidate in School Psychology at Fordham University) are both graduates of the TBS Religious School and Machon High School and Youth Community.
Gil and his family moved to Roslyn in 1984, and shortly thereafter joined TBS. Since then he has served on the Men's Club Board, was Men's Club President 2007-2008, served as TBS Financial Secretary 2008-2010, and took on the role of Membership VP in 2010. He has also been a Shabbat Usher Captain, Co-Coordinator High Holiday Ushers, and Security Co-Chair for Shabbat 1000. Gil also currently serves on the Budget & FinanceCcommittee, House Committee, and High Holiday Committee
In addition to the time Gil spends at TBS, he was a Roslyn Little League Board Member/Commissioner for 15 years and served as a member of the Athletic Advisory committee and Technology Advisory Committee for the Roslyn School District.
Alan Goldstein
Treasurer
Alan is continuing as a member of the Executive Board as TBS Treasurer, the role which he has held since 2003.
When not concentrating on the Temple’s finances he and his wife Sherrie (a member of the Sisterhood Executive Board) and their children Jill and Todd (TBS Religious School & Machon graduates) can be found packing Yom Hashoa candles, coordinating Defensive Driving courses, dishing out potato latkes, apple sauce or ices to our Hebrew school children or lending a helping hand where needed. In addition to the Executive Board, Alan also serves on the Camp Committee and on the Men’s Club Executive Board.
Alan’s other full time job is as a Financial Controller and CFO for Citibank in the Corporate Headquarters. Alan is a CPA and earned his MBA in Taxation from St. John’s University.
Morty Schaja
Financial Secretary
Morty and his family first became involved with Temple Beth Sholom when they moved from Queens to Roslyn in 1992. Morty has been a member of the Board of Trustees and has served on the Budget & Finance Committee for the last 3 years. Morty has been active with Solomon Schechter of Nassau County having served on the school’s board for ten years and the school’s Executive Board for seven years as chair of the Finance committee.
Morty received a BS in Physics from Tel-Aviv University in 1975 and an MBA in Finance from Columbia University in 1976. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Morty has extensive experience in the financial services industry and recently co-founded RiverPark Capital where he serves as CEO. RiverPark manages hedge funds, actively managed ETFs, and is in the process of launching a family of mutual funds.
Rebecca Altman
Secretary
Rebecca Altman is a second generation member of TBS. Her parents, Marilyn and Barry Rubenstein, have been involved in TBS since they moved to Roslyn in 1976. Rebecca is a graduate of our religious school and Hebrew High School. She traveled to Israel on USY Pilgrimage with her confirmation class. Rebecca became a Bat Mitzvah and was married at TBS to her husband, Michael in June 2000. Her children, Ryan (9) and Rachel (5) both attended the ECC. Ryan is a student in the religious school and Rachel will begin her religious school journey in September.
Rebecca graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1991 and received a Masters in Education degree from Teachers College at Columbia University. After teacing for 15 years Rebecca made the difficult decision to stay home with her 2 young children. While at home she became very active in her community and at TBS.
She currently serves as PTA President at Harbor Hill Elementary School. At TBS she has served at PTA President of the ECC, Treasurer of the Religious School PTA and VP of Membership of Sisterhood amongst other things. She has been on the Board of Trustees for the past 2 years and also serves on the Board of Education, Membership and Camp Committees. She has helped plan many enjoyable and successful evetns including the Disco and the Family Fun Festival celebrating Temple Beth Sholom's 60th year. She is looking forward to her job as Secretary and to becoming more involved with ehr TBS family.
